Jamie Drummond is “Totally Obsessed with Hernias!!!”

Yes, I have been in hospital for a wee while… going through a straightforward incarcerated umbilical hernia repair…

“Hernia Schmernia” so many people said to me… well, I haven’t been under the scalpel since I was a wee boy of 8 years old when I had an appendectomy, so this was a rather big deal for me.

It all began one night in New York City… we think it did anyway…

Laura and I were down in NYC for the weekend to catch up with some friends and attend David Mancuso’s Loft party. On the Friday we had arranged to meet up with a couple of pals for drinks before going for a vegan cooking class at the home of my very good friend Sal Principato of Liquid Liquid fame. The problem was, after meeting with Simon and Spencer, things went a little crazy and rather too much crisp and dry rosé wine was consumed…

and so by the time we arrived at Sal’s pad I was a little squiffy. Much hilarity ensued as Sal taught us how to cook the most delicious vegan dosas, and we were having a great time until I decided that it would be a great idea to climb atop one of Sal’s kitchen stools in order to take a special aerial photograph of our frivolities. This was a terrible idea as I proceeded to crash to the floor, hitting our low table, destroying almost every one of our host’s wine and water glasses, and smacking the bone directly behind my right ear quite severely on the aforementioned table. Our evening ended quite abruptly soon after this incident… I wasn’t feeling too great either… I still wonder to this day if I did some kind of strange damage to my hypothalamus or pituitary gland with that glancing blow to the head?… as it was just after this catastrophe that everything began to go a little pear -shaped for Mr. Drummond…

The next evening Laura and myself met up with a couple of her friends and had the most delicious 8 course dinner at the wonderful Hearth restaurant in the Lower East Side. When we returned to our friend’s apartment things began to feel very strange indeed. I had to wake Laura up in the middle of the night as it felt as if my bellybutton was turning inside out… and, as a matter, of fact it was…
