Thanks to the admirable work of Wines Of Austria, when people think of Austrian wine, they tend to think of Grüner Veltliner, or perhaps, just perhaps, Riesling. Indeed Austria produces some of the finer examples of these two varietals on the planet, but this country also produces some spectacular red wines.

With this in mind, we met up with Master of Wine Andreas Wickhoff from Premium Estates of Austria, who was in Toronto again to promote the organisation’s stellar range of wines. As we had interviewed him previously about PEOA, we decided to take this opportunity to quiz him about the importance of red varietals in Austria.

What followed was a 10 minute 101 in the three top Austrian red varieties: Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent… this is some superb stuff from Andreas Wickhoff MW.
