On a recent rip to Umbria in central Italy I had the distinct pleasure of being hosted for lunch by the Tabarrini family at their small winery just outside of Montefalco.

Fourth generation grapegrowers, it wasn’t until the end of the 1990s that Giampaolo took the reins of the operation and decided to bottle his own wine under the family name. And what a splendid decision that was. Tabarrini now produce some of the most highly acclaimed wines of the region.

As well as being a skilled Winemaker, Giampaulo is also a real character, a gregarious gentleman whose outrageously genial hosting skills are somewhat reminiscent of the ebullient Norm Hardie of Prince Edward County infamy fame.

After a truly fantastic casual lunch cooked by his mother and served up by his gorgeous wife, Federica, I managed to get the ever-kinetic chap to sit down for a chat about his family, his wines, and the Trebbiano Spoletino grape… my new fascination.
